PH Champion Sustainable Schools Gear Up for 2015 ASEAN Schools Awards


Two national champions in elementary and high school category in the 2013 National Search for Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Schools will be the Philippine nominees to the 2015 ASEAN Eco-Schools Awards to be held on July 29-30, 2015 in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar. The said awarding ceremony is in line with the ASEAN Environment Year 2015 with the theme, “Empowering the Youth for a Green ASEAN Community”.
The Dubinan Elementary School in Santiago City, Isabela strongly abides and enforces the environmental policies crafted to sustain the programs, projects and activities. With lessons on
environmental protection, waste management, water and electricity conservation, anti-smoking and other programs are being taught. Daily lesson plans are being checked and there were a series of classroom observation and supervision to monitor the integration of environmental themes in the curriculum. Teachers were also trained on the different strategies and methods in teaching and in the preparation of instructional materials suitable to the environmental lessons and to the needs of the pupils.
Meanwhile, the Ateneo de Davao University – High School Unit’s environmental mission is to engage in environmental protection, protection of biodiversity and promotion of renewable energy. Their environmental program entitled Ecoteneo makes the
vision of a green and sustainable campus and Ecoteneans living a happy, healthy and ecological lifestyle. Because the environmental mission is seen in the light of faith that does social justice, the Ecoteneo spirit is: “One with the Earth, at peace with humanity, in reconciliation with God”.

The 2015 ASEAN Eco-Schools Awards is organized by the Government of Myanmar in partnership with Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund and ASEAN Secretariat.   


The said award seeks to recognize institutions of learning at the primary and secondary level that demonstrate values of environmental sustainability practices and carry out environmentally-friendly school policies, teaching programs and practices for the benefit of the school and surrounding communities. The criteria for the awards divided into four categories: (1.) School Policy and Administration; (2.) Teaching Modules and Learning Activities; (3.) Facilities and Environmental Practices and (4.) Partnership and Community Outreach.


In a related development, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources announced the on-going of the regional and national screening process for the 2015 National Search for Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Schools. The National Search is a direct response to Republic Act No. 9512 also known as the National Environmental Awareness and Education Act of 2008. The said nationwide search is organized by the DENR through the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB), in cooperation with the Department of Education, the Commission on Higher Education, Smart Communications, Inc., Nestle Philippines, Inc., One Meralco Foundation, Inc. and Land Bank of the Philippines.
